In Managua's "free trade zone" outside the capital employ 30.000 workers in "Maquilas", Textile companies which are all foreign owned by Mexican, American and Taiwanese firms. All the production is for global markets and is the one area which generates significant economic impulse to an otherwise moribund economy. Most of the workers are women.
